Some enthusiasts asked me why I didn't use solid wood to make a box with birch plywood. As we all know, the BBC school is very good at using the box to calibrate the sound, and the box material is also a means to calibrate the sound. There are also clear answers in the BBC's official design documents:

“the construction is of 12mm birch plywood with fillets of beech.

although no diffculty was found with this construction for original design (ls3/5),it was found that, for the LS3/5A, it was necessary to specify the wood more carefully than was originally thought necessary. the use of any type of hard wood such as Parana Pine for the fillets was found to be unacceptable as a clearly audible colouration was produced by a resonance of the L.F. unit on its chassis, and these fillets had insufficient mechanical impedance to reduce it ; this matter is reported in more detail elsewhere. ”

The design document clearly points out that the box body is 12mm birch plywood + beech, and this designated wood is very necessary. The experimental comparison shows that the use of any type of hard solid wood is unacceptable. The resonance transmitted to the bass unit (hard solid wood box) has a clear and audible impact on the bass.

In fact, Stereophile has used mlssa to test the LS3 / 5A birch plywood box after the rain. It is found that the resonance points of the box are 100Hz and 400Hz, while the resonance points of solid wood are far different.

Another important point is that in the north, the problem of cracks in solid wood boxes is difficult to avoid.

In order to ensure the damping characteristics of the box, asphalt damping plates are installed on the inner side plates of the speaker, and two layers are installed on the top and bottom.
